AtlantaBuddhism.org is pleased to welcome two charismatic American nuns (including former Atlanta resident and Agnes Scott College professor) coming to us from Sravasti Abbey, a Buddhist monastery in the Tibetan tradition in the Pacific Northwest.

Venerable Thubten Damcho, a Princeton University graduate, originally hails from Singapore and has led teachings throughout the world with Venerable Thubten Chodron of Sravasti Abbey.
Venerable Thubten Rinchen, a Stanford University graduate who holds a doctorate in physics, may be familiar as she used to attend teachings at Drepung Loseling right here in Atlanta!

Everyone is welcome to practice mindfulness and feel the joy in our hearts.

Wednesday May 6 at 7:30pm: Venerables Thubten Damcho and Thubten Rinchen will lead guided meditation and Dharma talk on cultivating love and compassion in our busy lives! Free, at Chua Quang Minh / Grant Park Meditation

Thursday May 7 at 7pm: The nuns will give a talk Thursday night at Drepung Loseling Monastery near Brookhaven, see below.

Beyond Bias: The Path of Joy & Equanimity
by Venerables Thubten Damcho & Thubten Rinchen
Thursday, May 7, 2026 • 7:00 pm at Drepung Loseling Monastery Atlanta

How do we navigate a complex world with the steady heart of a bodhisattva? While love and compassion are the familiar gateways, Joy and Equanimity are the pillars that stabilize a long-term practice. Join visiting nuns Venerables Thubten Damcho and Thubten Rinchen as they lead an exploration into the more nuanced pair of these “Four Abodes”: Empathic Joy and Equanimity.
We will discuss how to move past the subtle biases of “us vs. them” and how to cultivate a joy that isn’t dependent on our own personal gains. This evening is designed to help you deepen your existing practice, moving from intellectual understanding to a lived experience of a balanced, unshakable mind.
Donation is suggested.

Why does Buddhism encourage vegetarianism?

For hundreds of thousands of years,
The stew in the pot has boiled up
A resentment very hard to level.
If you want to know why
There are wars in the world,
Just listen to the haunting cries that come
From a slaughterhouse at midnight.

Meditation/mindfulness has many benefits, but it is not merely relaxing, sitting, or concentrating. In Buddhism, meditation means building up good habits of the mind -- an active way to transform our thoughts and views to nurture our compassion and to see clearly. Buddhist practices such as meditation allow us to leave behind our false projections and uncover the wisdom to be free from negative motivations such as greed, anger, and ignorance. Understanding reality lets us develop our wholesome virtues and attain liberation.

Meditation/mindfulness is a tool that can help us calm our minds, relieve stress, and become healthier. Yet it is not the same as merely relaxing or focusing -- it is an active process to develop and habituate ourselves to positive qualities such as altruistic love and compassion, a starting point to find the root causes of our problems and change them. In Buddhism, meditation gives us the framework that helps us to develop our full potential by understanding the true nature of reality. To be awakened means to see reality as it actually is, not as we think it is, not trapped by our ego, misconceptions, and prejudices. A clear mind is the source of the penetrating wisdom of deep insight -- one that dispels greed, anger, and delusions; one that truly understands cause and effect, interdependence, and impermanence; and thus uncovers the inherent wisdom within. This true wisdom brings us freedom and liberation from sufferings.

But don't just take our word for it. Come try out meditation with us! Even the Buddha himself never claimed to be a god, and said not to rely solely on blind faith of his teachings -- in fact, he encouraged free inquiry, and everything can be personally experienced. In Buddhism, we must practice the path ourselves, as we are responsible for our own thoughts and actions. Only through our own cultivation can we generate boundless compassion and deep insight -- e.g., reading cookbooks or looking at photos of food does not cure our hunger, we must actually choose to eat!
